For most projects, the balance between control system and luminaire quality and quantity is a sliding scale. On this project, artist Peter McMeikan moved the slider dramatically in favour of the luminaires to achieve this stunning result.

Sub-contracting to electrical contractor TES and builder Georgiou, the Light Application team were able to value engineer the control system to such an extent that sufficient budget was freed up to allow for animated backlighting of each and every artwork section. The animation creates a rippling water effect, tweaked for the perfect amount of movement and colour. PureLED Flexi Addressable RGB strip lighting provides the backlighting and pureLED Gecko drivers are used for control.

The cost associated with an expensive headend controller was completely mitigated by generating the animated lighting sequence using Light Application’s in-house controllers and recording it to an SD card for playback directly from the luminaire drivers. The stunning, mirror finish artwork sections were fabricated and installed by Living Iron, reflecting not only within the piece but across the water.
